Inmate Jumps From Transport Van In Lansing, Freeway Closed
The Lansing State Journal reports that an inmate attempted to escape custody Wednesday afternoon by jumping from a transport van along US-127 in Lansing.
The incident happened on US-127 near the Mount Hope Road overpass, forcing the closure of the southbound lanes. As of 4:15 PM Wednesday, the freeway remains closed.
According to the report, the man in custody was wearing leg irons when he was able to force open the door of an Ingham County Sheriff's department inmate transport van. He jumped from the moving vehicle along the freeway, and is reported to be in critical condition.
The transport van had 11 inmates aboard en route to the Ingham County Jail in Mason from Veterans Memorial Courthouse in downtown Lansing.
