FDA Recalling Lemons, Limes, Oranges, and Potatoes Due to Listeria Risk
Time to do a sweep of your entire kitchen because lots of things we eat/use on a daily basis are being recalled.
Almost two weeks after a giant recall of onions due to salmonella there's now a voluntary recall of lemons, limes, oranges, and potatoes because of a listeria risk.
The FDA issued the recall on August 9 after the company Freshouse II, LLC discovered Listeria monocytogenes on one of the equipments in their packing facility during a routine inspection.
We have ceased the production and distribution of the product that was packed on the equipment in question and are taking corrective actions and continually evaluating our cleaning and sanitation regimes.
Because of this the following food items (with the listed brands) are being recalled:
- 2lb mesh bags of Limes - Freshouse
- 1lb mesh bags of Organic Limes - Natures Promise
- 3lb mesh bags of Red B Potatoes - Fresh from the Start
- 2lb mesh bags of Lemons - Fresh from the Start
- 2lb mesh bags of Lemons - Wegmans
- 4lb mesh bags of Valencia Oranges - Wegmans
This also includes 40-50 pound bags/boxes that were delivered to wholesalers.
According to the FDA the recalled items were shipped to retailer distribution centers in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia and to wholesalers in Maryland and North Carolina. Even though none are in Michigan, it's still a good idea to err on the side of caution since we know that from past experiences with recalls, they usually end up expanding to other states.
Anyone who has these foods that are listed should destroy the product to make sure it isn't consumed.
No illnesses have been reported thankfully but Listeria can cause serious illness (sometimes fatal) if those who are compromised become ill. This includes pregnant women, the elderly, children, and those with weak immune systems. Listeria is a germ that causes people to get sick after eating contaminated food. Common symptoms include nausea, high fever, diarrhea, stiffness, and severe headache.
