The race for the Michigan United States Senate seat held by Debbie Stabenow just got really interesting. Robert Young, the former Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court has announced he is running for the Republican nomination for the job. Young would be the first African-American Senator from the state if he is elected. His announcement also greatly complicates Senator Stabenow’s line of attacks as they will be more closely watched with a candidate of Young’s stature in the running.

The seat currently held by Stabenow has been considered safe for the most part. President Trump carried Michigan in 2016 but his win was narrow and Democrats have spent every moment since in an effort to destroy him politically. Young was one of the 21 people named as possible Supreme Court nominees when the President released his list during the campaign.

Young is considered to be a formidable candidate with plenty of money and the fact that he is very conservative and black will bring plenty of attention to the race. It will certainly test whether or not the Democrats are losing traction with their traditional hold on black voters in Michigan and around the country.
