The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative was launched in 2010 to accelerate efforts to protect and restore the largest system of fresh surface water in the world — the Great Lakes.

During FY15 -19, federal agencies will continue to use Great Lakes Restoration Initiative resources to strategically target the biggest threats to the Great Lakes ecosystem and to accelerate progress toward long term goals for this important ecosystem.

These actions will build on restoration and protection work carried out under the first GLRI Action Plan, with a major focus on:

  • Cleaning up Great Lakes Areas of Concern
  • Preventing and controlling invasive species
  • Reducing nutrient runoff that contributes to harmful/nuisance algal blooms
  • Restoring habitat to protect native species

With that being said, according to the Michigan Capital Confidential news site, why was Michigan State University awarded $1.5 million back in 2010 from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, for researchers to:

work with physicians and other health care providers in Michigan to provide them with the tools and information they need to identify at-risk patients and inform them of the benefits and potential dangers of eating fish

How does their statement coincide with the goals of the program, I humbly submit that they do not.

Now onto another report by the Michigan Capital Confidential news site in which we find that the fund spent $203,874 in 2014 for Indian reservations in Minnesota:

to evaluate moose and deer use of habitat sites designed and managed for the benefit of moose

Again how does the spending of those funds relate to the funds goals.

They once again do not.

These are just a few small examples of the wasteful and what looks like possible illegal spending of our hard earned tax dollars or the money we borrow.

By the way President Trump's proposed budget looks to cut 97% of this fund. It sounds like a good idea, if this is what they are spending our money on. On the budget cut our dear Democrat Senator Debbie Stabenow said spending like the ones I pointed out above was critical and the cuts outrageous.

Who and what is outrageous Senator Stabenow?
