With erratic temperatures across Michigan over the past several days we're being warned about thinning ice on Michigan's waterways. Here's a photo of Lake Alliance in Eaton County taken earlier today. The experts say while ice may be thick in places in other areas it may be very thin. They say that combined with underwater currents can make it very treacherous. Often just an upper layer of water freezes. As time goes on the actual water level underneath could drop leaving a large gap of air between the ice surface and the water beneath it. This is especially dangerous. They also note when on any body of water always wear a life vest. They say never go out alone and always have a charged cell phone with you.
