The state is now in charge of Belle Isle operations and plenty of work is now being done. In addition to cleaning up debris, facilities are being repaired and renovated. Here you see a picture (taken 2-24-2013) of an abandoned building at the former Belle Isle Safari Zoo. To help cover these costs starting in about a month to take your vehicle to the park there will be a yearly charge of $11. Belle Isle was created in 1845 and covers about 982 acres. It's situated on the Detroit River between Canada and the U.S. mainland is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
