Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit. I had no idea there would be so many of Michigan’s safest cities in that region. Well if you are to believe a site called alarms.org.

According to their website Alarms.org is the official site of the National Council for Home Safety and Security. The National Council for Home Safety and Security is a national trade association comprised of licensed alarm installers, contractors, and other relevant trade groups across the United States. They state that their goal is “to further industry education and public knowledge about home safety and security”

According to alarms.org they only reviewed data for cities with populations of more than 10,000, their study included 134 cities/communities in Michigan. They then used the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics and its own population data and internal research in its methodology.

Alarms then ranked the cities based on the number of reported violent crimes and property crimes per 1,000 people, with certain variables weighted differently, with violent crimes accounting for 1.5 of the total because of their severity, than property crimes, according to the website.

What I was surprised about was the fact that Oakland County, located near Detroit has seven of the top 10 safest places to live in the state. In fact according to the study, of the 25 safest communities in Michigan, 19 of them are in Oakland County.

So where did your city rank, well let us first give you the top 10 and they are:

1.    Grosse Ile Township (Wayne County)

2.    Oakland Township (Oakland County)

3.    Hamburg Township (Livingston County)

4.    Brandon Township (Oakland County)

5.    South Lyon (Oakland County)

6.    Flushing Township (Genesee County)

7.    Rochester (Oakland County)

8.    Independence Township (Oakland County)

9.    Milford (Oakland County)

10.  Springfield Township (Oakland County)

I was surprised to find out Detroit did not rank last, they actually came in ranked at 131 out of 134 cities/communities. The shame of coming in last goes to Benton Township in Berrien County.

I was sad to hear some of the cities in my listening markets did not fair well in this study.

Lansing ranked 119 out of 134

Battle Creek ranked 124 out of 134

Kalamazoo ranked 128 out of 134
