A massive home in Detroit's iconic Palmer Woods neighborhood has hit the market for nearly $9 million. The Bishop Mansion is certainly beautiful, but it is also a work in progress.

About the Bishop Mansion

The iconic home was built in the 1920s for the Archdiocese of Detroit. The 62-room home is considered the most significant house in the Palmer Woods district. It was built for the Fisher brothers for Bishop Michael Gallagher of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit.

Religious themes are prevalent throughout the inside and outside of the home. Bishop Gallagher lived in the home until his death in 1937 and subsequent archbishops have occupied the home as well.

In 1988, the home was sold to Detroit Pistons star John Salley. Salley owned the property until 1995 when he sold it to Bishop Wayne T. Jackson of Great Faith Ministries International.

The mansion was sold in 2017 for $2.5 million to a real estate developer from California who collects houses with historic value.

A Work in Progress

Although some renovations have taken place, there are many opportunities for improvements in this home. Is that code for 'Fixer-Upper?' Take a look at the pictures below and you'll see what we mean.

Some rooms have been stripped down to the studs, but according to the listing the home has 'good bones.' It features 12 bedrooms and 11 bathrooms, a stunning entryway, high ceilings, and copious amounts of rich history throughout.

The Official Listing

The Bishop Mansion is listed by Amanda Uhlianuk at RE/MAX Complete for a whopping $8,999,000.
