Recommendations for land acquisitions and projects for 2022 have been made.

As we head into 2022, over $45.6 million could be used to support outdoor recreation in Michigan. The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board, along with Governor Gretchen Whitmer recommended that 117 different projects be supported in the upcoming year. These projects include recreation development projects and land acquisitions. The total for all the projects is estimated to cost $45,592,200.

We all know that Michigan is a great state to spend time outdoors and it is great to see funding that will help improve and continue that. The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund was created in 1976. Since then, the trust fund has granted $1.2 billion to state an local agencies to develop and improve recreation options in Michigan. The trust fund gets the money from interest and earnings from revenues tied to state-owned gas, oil, and minerals.

What are some of the recommended development projects in Genesee County?

The projects recommended in Genesee County include:

  • The Neff Road Bike Path Project in Vienna Charter Township - $296,600
  • Miracle League Field in Mundy Charter Township - $256,400
  • Branch Road Universal Design Fishing Access in Genesee County - $240,500
  • Linden Park Pickleball Courts in Genesee County - $296,000

I really look forward to seeing some of these bike paths and pickleball courts finished.

Since the start of the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund in 1976, Genesee County has received $22,278,791 in funding. It looks like the first bit of funding was for land acquisition in Grand Blanc for McFarlan Farm in 1980. The first development grant was for the Flint River Shoreline in 1988.
