Which Fast Food Restaurant Has the Healthiest Beef?
Here's some thing you might want to know and also maybe not, because a consumers group went out to measure the amount of antibiotics in beef. The news of their findings weren't great as only two restaurants graded very well.
According to this report from uspirg.org, which was done by several groups like U.S. Public Interest Research Group Education Fund, the Natural Resources Defense Council, Consumer Reports and the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University, the reason why they are looking into the amount of antibiotics in beef is because they say
"The overuse of antibiotics in livestock production significantly contributes to the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria."
The report, which only gave two restaurants an A grade, measured 25 fast food or fast casual restaurants, and only Panera Bread and Chipotle got an A grade with Chipotle taking the top spot. It's not very good after that as McDonald's and Subway get a C grade, so they are taking steps to reduce the antibiotics in their beef. Everyone after that either gets a D (Wendy's & Taco Bell) or F, with a majority of the restaurants getting an F mark.
If you are wondering why these places got an F, it is because the report was looking at if restaurants had a policy or instituted a policy to address this issue. Apparently, Arby's, Burger King and Jack in the Box received failing grades for having no policies for antibiotics in beef. Taco Bell and Wendy's earned Ds, due to what the report authors called insufficient plans to reduce antibiotic use. You can see more on the report here.
