For the second year in a row, Grand Haven has cancelled their 4th of July fireworks celebration.

The city has been going back-and-forth with the decision but made it final at their city council meeting on Monday evening. FOX 17 says city officials consulted with the Ottawa County Health Department and department of public safety whom said

...it would not be possible to adequately enforce those rules.

The rules being for COVID-19, obviously. The fireworks event would have to be limited to only 1,000 people and everyone would have to wear a mask and maintain a six-foot distance. Not only that, but the rising cases of COVID-19 in the city and county was a cause for concern.

On top of all of that, Wolverine Fireworks Display (the company hired to supply the fireworks) gave the city a deadline to make a decision or they'd lose on their deposit. With all of these factors it was a unanimous decision to cancel.

According to the Grand Haven Tribune Ottawa County has been seeing 200 new positive cases per day.

Other West Michigan cities to cancel their 4th of July events include South Haven and Schoolcraft (near Kalamazoo). Muskegon decided to forego their celebrations as well but then said never mind a couple weeks later.
