Lee Chatfield Michigan’s Speaker of the House yesterday refuted calls by a few Republican lawmakers to impeach the Governor over her actions mitigating the spread of Covid-19. Chatfield called the action by Milford Township Republican Rep. Matt Maddock a distraction from what we need to do in the state.

The talk of impeaching Whitmer by Maddock started after Robert Gordon, The Health Director, mandated a three-week shutdown of parts of our state's economy. Those steps were being taken to stop the accelerating spread of Covid-19. Maddock said that Whitmer “crossed the line” on Covid-19 mandates without legislative approval, and five of his Republican partners support his position.

However, Chatfield said an effort to impeach Whitmer would lack merit and would be every bit as “shameful” as the impeachment efforts against President Donald Trump. “We’re not the party that impeaches someone because we’re upset with policies that they’ve enacted,” he said.

Lee Chatfield and Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey criticized the Governor for the partial shutdown saying the people of Michigan deserve input on these decisions. Chatfield also said that House Republicans are willing to act in a bipartisan way when the Governor decides it’s worth her time.

So, the political shenanigans continue with our state government, the Governor and the White House. All we can do is sit by and watch the drama. And pray that we can stand together long enough to defeat this invisible enemy known as Covid-19.
