At 7:10 a.m. Thursday morning, the Battle Creek Fire Department responded to the W.K. Kellogg Airport located at 15551 South Airport Road for a reported fire on the roof at the Airport Operations Building.

Upon arrival, no visible fire or smoke conditions were present. Battle Creek Fire Department Rescue 4 and Truck 6 investigated and found smoldering on the roof deck materials near a sky light. Part of the roof was exposed to ensure there was no further fire hidden within the roof. The rest of the building was then checked to ensure there was no hidden fire conditions.

A lighting strike is believed to be the cause of the fire, however, it is unknown when it occurred. The damage was limited to roof decking material around a skylight. There were no injuries. Normal operations at the airport building have resumed.
