John Ball Zoo is now open for the season. In addition to new real-life animals, there are also 16 larger-than-life aquatic animals on display throughout the Grand Rapids' zoo.

Washed Ashore: A New Exhibit Coming to John Ball Zoo

Have you ever visited Lake Michigan to find the beach trashed? Or seen garbage floating in the Grand River? "Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea" takes that debris that once polluted our nation's waterways and turns into into something beautiful: Large scale sculptures.

The Washed Ashore Project aims to educate about plastic pollution in the ocean and waterways and its devastating effects on aquatic life. The goal is to spark positive changes in consumer habits and promote environmental conservation and sustainability.

John Ball Zoo says,

Turning marine debris into beautiful pieces of art, Washed Ashore artists create large, powerful sculptures that captivate all ages and teach environmental conservation and sustainability. From giant eagles made of recycled ocean waste to colorful jellyfish created from beach cleanups, the numerous sculptures graphically illustrate the tragedy of plastic pollution in our oceans and waterways while providing a fun, engaging, and educational opportunity for all of our guests.

The traveling art exhibit opens at John Ball Zoo April 1, 2022 and will viewable through the end of the season in the fall.
