Gov. Whitmer Reacts to News that Trump Has Tested Positive for COVID
Governor Gretchen Whitmer has reacted to the news that President Donald Trump and the First Lady of the United States have tested positive for COVID-19.
Michigan's governor said that she hopes the president and his wife are able to recover quickly and noted that the disease knows no limits.
"I want to start by wishing the president and first lady a speedy recovery," Whitmer said in a press release. "This virus doesn't care if you're rich or poor, a Republican or a Democrat, young or old. No one is immune. Not even the president."
Without criticizing the president, Whitmer took the opportunity to reiterate the importance of taking measures to stop the spread of coronavirus.
"Here's the good news. We can beat this enemy – but it's going to take every single one of us working together to do it. Right now the most effective weapon we have is pretty simple: it's wearing a mask that covers your nose and mouth. It's washing your hands with soap and water. And maintaining six feet of physical distance from one another."
Donald Trump is frequently seen not following these protocols and mocked his Democratic opponent Joe Biden at the first presidential debate for wearing masks and wearing "the biggest mask I've ever seen."
Whitmer concluded by noting that COVID-19 is not a Republican or Democrat issue, but one that all of us face.
"My sincere hope is that today's news will serve as a wakeup call to every single American," the governor said. "We are all in this together. Let's all do our part. Let's all mask up. And let's get through this together, as one nation."
