Democrat Wants To Close All Prisons

The ideas coming from Congresspeople in the Democratic Party today are getting weirder and weirder.  This time the newest crazy idea is coming from none other than Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.).

The other day she tweeted the following:

Mass incarceration is our American reality.  It is a system whose logic evolved from the same lineage as Jim Crow, American apartheid, & slavery. To end it, we have to change. That means we need to have a real conversation about decarceration & prison abolition in this country.

She then followed that doozy of a tweet with the following:

A cage is a cage is a cage. And humans don’t belong in them

I must admit I never knew that "Prison abolition" is a very popular proposal of the international left.  Now, not only are the international left calling for this proposal but also some in the Democratic Party.

Prison abolition calls for the:

Deep, structural reforms to how we handle and even think about crime in our country.

What would AOC and the other liberals replace prison with, well of course "restorative justice“.  What is “restorative justice”:

Restorative Justice is a theory of justice that emphasizes repairing the harm caused by criminal behavior. It is best accomplished through cooperative processes that allow all willing stakeholders to meet, although other approaches are available when that is impossible. This can lead to transformation of people, relationships and communities.

The foundational principles of restorative justice have been summarized as follows:

• Crime causes harm and justice should focus on repairing that harm.

• The people most affected by the crime should be able to participate in its resolution.

• The responsibility of the government is to maintain order and of the community to build peace.

They would also like to increase spending on social welfare programs which they say they would then use the additional tax dollars to target the "root causes" of crime.

Those who might think I am picking on the Democratic Party or exaggerating the left’s position.  Well you probably do not remember that the Democratic Socialists of America, with which Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez does belong to, passed a resolution at its 2019 convention establishing a prison-abolition working group.
