Cross Country Skiers Frustrated With Warmer Temps

A decade ago, you could go cross country skiing nearly every weekend in the Lansing area. Now those perfectly powdered opportunities are fewer and farther between.

Warmer winters are particularly obvious to people who enjoy winter sports like cross country skiing, snowshoeing and sledding.

Climate change is the number one threat to the snow sports industry, said Mickey MacWilliams, who is the executive director of the Michigan Snowsports Industries Association.

According to the Lansing State Journal, the Michigan association joined national snow sports groups in calling on Congress for climate action, including setting a price on carbon.

Ski resorts have been forced to adapt to shorter seasons and a greater reliance on artificial snow. Some businesses are using more energy efficient snow machines to save money and shrink their carbon footprints.

Some spots in Michigan are seeing less snow on average, while other areas could see more snowfall because of lake effect and shifting jet streams. Due to higher overnight lows, that snow is likely to melt sooner. Please click on the above link for more information.
