It was a day of fun and hope for young cancer survivors as Children's Hospitals of Michigan hosted Childhood Cancer Survivor Day at CJ Barrymore's on Saturday.

This is the 26th year Children's Hospitals has hosted the celebration of life event, honoring those children who've endured more than anyone should ever have to and have had the opportunity to leave the hospital after overcoming cancer.

An Event to Celebrate Triumph Over Cancer

Wendi Henning is a pediatric oncology social worker for Children's Hospitals of Michigan. In the video below, she tells Detroit's WXYZ-TV that the event is more than just a fun day out. It's an opportunity for kids who are still battling cancer and going through treatment to see other kids who are farther along in their journeys and to observe that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

"These are the times when they can get together and share their stories of survivorship and what they're doing now sot that the kids who are maybe a year out and still not completely back to normal can really see that there is life after cancer and that things do get better," Henning said.

Each Year is a Milestone

More than 400 kids got to enjoy a day filled with free go-kart rides, putt-putt golf, rock climbing, and games.

During Saturday's event, each of the participants was given a medal and a t-shirt in order to commemorate another year of surviving cancer.
