Can you Own a Tank in Michigan?
Is it legal for you to own a tank in Michigan? This is a question that has been on my mind A LOT lately. Not really, sarcasm aside, I was curious if I could legally own a tank in Michigan.
I guess I would have to figure out why I needed a tank. Is it because I am worried about my karma coming back on me for my previous 48 years? If that's the case I don't think a tank would help me.
If I owned a tank it wouldn't because paranoia runs my life. I think tanks are impressive machines and owning one would give me away to show it off. Tank clubs could be fun.
Cleveland.com did some research and the results are below:
tank ownership legal, it is legal in every state. Thankfully, most of the tanks available for purchase are expensive, vintage and nonfunctional. Often, they require modifications and can be pricey to ship since many are of foreign provenance.
When it comes to owning a functioning tank:
Technically, purchasing a functional tank (one with an operational cannon) is legal but most civilians don’t qualify. A Destructive Device permit or license is required, and these are very seldom issued. It’s a bureaucratic hassle, background checks are thorough and even if the buyer jumps through all the hoops and is approved, operation of the tank is very limited.
If you buy one, hopefully your neighbors are cool about it. Some neighbors can be uptight.
How cool would it be to have a functioning tank? I don't know because I have never desired one. If it gets to a point that I feel the need to own a functioning tank I should probably talk to my therapist.
