Reports of Active Shooter at Michigan Outlet Mall Turn Out False

Multiple reports of an active shooter situation at a Michigan outlet shopping mall turned out to be erroneous, according to police.

The Auburn Hills Police Department confirmed on Twitter that there had been no confirmed shooter and that there were no injuries following multiple reports of an active shooter inside the Great Lakes Crossing Outlet mall in Auburn Hills Saturday (4/8).

Fight Breaks Out at Outlet Mall

CBS Detroit reports that Auburn Hills police officers were at the mall Saturday evening taking a report about a theft that had allegedly occurred at the mall. While officers were taking that report around 6:22 pm, a fight broke out among a group of teenagers in the mall's food court area.

Officers attempted to break up the fight and had to resort to using a Taser to subdue a combative participant. After the Taser was deployed, an unknown person shouted "Shots fired."

At that point, people began running from the mall, and as Mlive reports, social media and local 911 operators became flooded with reports of an active shooter inside the mall.

Active Shooter Message to Customers and Employees

At that time, management at Great Lakes Crossing deployed an active-shooter warning message in an attempt to get customers and employees to evacuate the mall or shelter in place.

The entire mall was searched by police officers before the shelter-in-place order was lifted.

The two juveniles who were involved in the fight are said to have fled from the facility in handcuffs. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Auburn Hills PD at 248-370-9444.
