Detroit Tigers star Victor Martinez had surgery on a torn medial meniscus in his left knee today, and the team says the procedure was successful.

Martinez tore his medial meniscus during offseason workouts last month. This is the same knee that Martinez suffered a microfracture and torn ACL in three years ago, which caused him to miss the entire 2012 season.

Martinez hit .335 for a career-best 32 home runs and 103 RBI last season. Playing DH for the Tigers, he figured to bat fourth behind Miguel Cabrera again this year.

If Martinez’s absence is extended, the Tigers could make a move to replace his production in the lineup.

Detroit just signed Martinez to a four-year, $68 million deal this offseason. He finished second in the AL MVP voting last season.
