Update: Ban on Ban for Straight-Ticketing Voting Continues
U.S. District Court Judge Gershwin Drain denied a motion by Michigan attorneys to lift his injunction blocking the legislation passed by Michigan banning straight-ticket voting.
That means the law cannot go into effect until further court proceedings. This will make it complicated concerning what the ballots should look like in the fall.
As quoted in a Detroit News article Judge Drain believes that “lifting the injunction would subject Michigan voters to the “harms” of the straight-ticket voting ban”. The judge previously stated that the law was likely to disproportionately burden African-American voters because they have historically used the straight-ticket option a higher rate than white people.
I still do not get what color has to do with voting, do you? I have been saying for years when are we going to stop allowing the democrat party to constantly put us into groups of people instead of looking at us all as Americans first. Was it not MLK who stated it is the content of your character not the color of your skin?
Michigan’s Secretary of State and Attorney General have filed an emergency motion with the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, stating that the law is “neutral, and not discriminatory” and applies equally to all voters, regardless of race. They are asking for the appeals court to take this up by Wednesday. The AG and SOS are asking for an immediate “stay” so Michigan can implement the law in time for this falls general election.
FYI; Michigan is only one of 10 states that allow straight-ticket voting.
