My son Nick will graduate from the University of Michigan in Flint in December, but there will be no commencement ceremony, not this year anyway. All graduation ceremonies for the remainder of this year and April of 2021 will be postponed until late April of next year and of course, that is subject to change.

And that's not all that's changing at U of M.

A recent letter to U of M students outlined what can be expected on campus as the fall semester begins. The university will be implementing numerous protocols as it works to help students and faculty members stay safe during the coronavirus pandemic.

"Our work has been and will continue to be guided by the latest public health information on the most reliable ways to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus that continues to persist," the letter states.

The university will offer a combination of online and in-person classes, and in many cases, students will be able to choose if they want to attend in person or remotely. Large classes will primarily be held online and small classes will be held in person, at least for the most part. Medium classes will utilize a combination of online and in-person resources.

Also in place this year:

    • Masks must be worn on campus, even outside.
    • The fall break will be eliminated, so in-person classes will be wrapped up by November 8th with the remainder of instruction being conducted online.
    • Graduation will not be held in December.
    • Physical barriers will be in place in order to enforce social distancing.
