Meridian Township planning documents describe Haslett Village Square as underutilized retail space hidden behind expanses of parking lot.

According to the Lansing State Journal, the shopping center, first constructed in 1980 then expanded in 1985, sits at the southwest corner of Haslett and Marsh roads in the northern tier of Meridian Township. Most of the center has sat vacant for years.

A developer is looking to claim about a third of the acreage and invest $12 million in a nearly 150,000 square foot residential complex for people 55 and older.

This could very likely be part one of maybe a three phase total redevelopment of Haslett Village Square.

According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates from 2017, around 19,800 people call the area home.

But even as the population has grown, the community has seen an exodus of businesses from Haslett Village Square. The biggest issue came when the shopping center lost its anchor after L&L Food Center closed in 2011.
