I feel safest of all
I can lock all my doors
It's the only way to live in cars"-Gary Numan, Cars

Do you also think about the color?   A study by vehicle-sales search site iSeeCars found the most "valuable" hues aren't always the most popular. The most popular car colors in 2021 were white, gray, silver, and black.

What Is The Most Valuable Car Color?

Believe it or not, it's yellow. Yellow-colored cars re-sale value comes partly due to scarcity but also because it's most commonly a color for sports cars and other low-volume vehicles that hold their value relatively well.

If you're planning on buying a convertible make sure it's a red one because that's the shade that holds its value best over time, according to iSeeCars.  A hardcover coupe, however, should be grey.

What If I Want A Color That Is Not Mainstream?

Are you ready to be shocked? CarMax recently released data showing the states where each vibrant car color is the most popular... and the results are surprising. For example, if you want a fun-colored car like orange, you probably live in Nebraska. Here is their list:

  • Orange: Nebraska
  • Blue: Rhode Island
  • Brown: Maine
  • Gold: Idaho
  • Gray: California
  • Green: Idaho again!  Side note: Green is the least common color for cars in the entire world.
  • Black: New Hampshire
  • Red: Utah
  • Silver: Idaho again!
  • Tan: Minnesota
  • White: California
  • Yellow: New Hampshire again!
  • Purple: MICHIGAN!

A throwback to the muscle cars of the 1950s and 1960s, purple is a bold choice for a car on today’s streets. It may be unique and eye-catching, it may not bode well for future resale. Kelley Blue Book explains that less popular colors (like purple) “depreciate your vehicle’s value… from hundreds to thousands of dollars depending on the vehicle.”
