Pass A Physical?
The question I have for all of you is, should woman have to pass the same physical as men to become a firefighter or police officer?
Well apparently in the city of New York the answer is no!
According to an article in the New York Post, the FDNY for the first time in its history will allow someone who failed its crucial Functional Skills Training test to become a firefighter.
A 33 year old woman will graduate today from the Fire Academy without passing the Functional Skills Training test. This test is a difficult obstacle course of job-related tasks performed in full gear with a limited air supply, an insider has revealed.
One firefighter was quoted in the article as saying “They’re going to allow the first person to graduate without passing because this administration has lowered the standard.”
Why are the powers that be allowing this?
There are not enough women in the force. Only 44 of the FDNY’s 10,500 firefighters are female.
Do you believe this is a good reason?
Should the test be easier for women?
Two other female cadets did pass the test with flying colors and will become firefighters.
Other female firefighters are not happy about her treatment.
One was quoted in the article saying “A lot of the girls in the field are pissed because they feel like they’re getting lumped into the same category of a female getting special treatment and not meeting the same standards as the males,” and “It devalues what the women in the field have accomplished.”
Is this fair to the other firefighters, male or female, who have passed the test and may need the help of this firefighter to save them?
Is this fair to the citizen trapped in a fire, male or female, who may need the help of this firefighter to save them?
Let’s discuss this tomorrow (Wednesday) on my show The Live with Renk show, which airs Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to noon, to let me know your thoughts at (269) 441-9595.
