Owosso joins the movement to create a downtown social district for people to enjoy.

Last July, a law passed through the Michigan Legislature to allow social districts to be created throughout the state. These common areas would allow for the outdoor consumption of alcohol between 10 am and 10 pm Monday through Saturday and noon until 10 pm on Sundays.

The Owosso Downtown Development Authority proposed the idea last week at a city council meeting. The Owosso City Council approved the idea and a few restaurants have already signed up to take part in it. Those three restaurants are Niche, Lily Pearl's Lounge, and Roma's Back Door.

You know this has been a terrible year, of course, for all bars and restaurants and the entire economy as well...But this may allow a little foot traffic in the downtown area to help other local businesses...said Eric Lab, owners of Roma's Back Door.

In this new social district, customers would be allowed to openly consume alcohol on designated sidewalks and areas in Downtown Owosso. The restaurants participating would create specially designed 16-ounce plastic cups to sell to those customers that want to consume their drinks outdoors. If the social district is approved through the state, it would take the city and restaurants two to three months to acquire all of the needed permits.

The Village of Holly is also trying to turn their Battle Alley area into a social district as well.

I would love to see more of these social districts pop up. That is one of the things I love about Vegas. Being able to grab a drink and move around and be social is really fun.
