Michigan State Police are hitting the roads again with Operation Ghost Rider.

What Is Operation Ghost Rider?

Operation Ghost Rider is an initiative undertaken by the Michigan State Police to prevent dangerous driving and enforce traffic laws. This operation is a part of the state's ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of its citizens on the roads.

What Are Police Looking For?

The initiative involves undercover police officers, dressed in plain clothes and driving unmarked vehicles, patrolling the highways and streets of Michigan.

These officers watch for reckless drivers who engage in dangerous behavior such as texting while driving, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, speeding, and other forms of distracted driving.

You Won't See Them Until It's Too Late

Once a dangerous driver is identified, the police officers alert their colleagues in marked patrol cars, who pull the drivers over and issue citations or arrest them if necessary.

By using unmarked vehicles and plainclothes officers, Operation Ghost Rider aims to catch reckless drivers off guard and deter them from engaging in dangerous behavior in the future.

Has Operation Ghost Rider Been A Success?

The program has been successful in reducing distracted driving and improving safety on Michigan's highways. In its first year of operation in 2019, Operation Ghost Rider led to over 1,000 tickets being issued for distracted driving violations.

The program continued in 2020 and has since expanded to include additional patrols and increased enforcement efforts.
