The 17 year old standout hoping to play for the Michigan State University Spartan football team when he graduates is due in court today in his assault case.

Jayru Campbell is charged with body slamming a security guard at Detroit Cass Tech after he told the quarterback repeatedly to remove his hood while in school.  The incident was captured on cell phone video and posted on YouTube prompting the investigation.  He is facing a preliminary hearing today in district court on one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.

MLive.com is reporting that Wayne County prosecutors say Campbell allegedly used profane language, then picked up the officer and slammed him into the ground.  He suffered head and face injuries.

Campbell claims he was defending himself and that the guard initiated the contact.  The video, however, shows that does not appear to be the case..

The report also indicates that because Campbell turned 17 just a month before the assault, he will be charged as an adult.  There is a petition drive underway to allow him to face charges in juvenile court, but prosecutors say that due to his age that is not an option.

Campbell, who has been suspended from school due to the incident, had verbally commited to playing for MSU.  The Spartans, though, say a "verbal" commitment is not legally binding.
