MSP Offers Tips to Staying Safe in Winter Weather

As the countdown toward the biggest snowstorm of the year is on, the Michigan State Police have issued a list of tips to help keep you and your family safe.

Rain is expected to change over to snow Tuesday (2/1) night and a significant amount of snow is expected to fall during the day on Wednesday.

How Much Snow is Expected?

Meteorologist Ahmad Bajjey with our news partner Mid-Michigan Now says snowfall amounts along the I-69 corridor in Genesee, Lapeer, and Shiawassee Counties will likely be in the 7 to 10-inch range, but amounts may vary depending on your location. Areas to our north such as Bay County will likely see significantly less snowfall while more accumulating snow may fall as you get farther south.

Gov. Whitmer Urges Michiganians to Stay Safe

Even Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer weighed in on Michigan's impending snowstorm.

“Michiganders should prepare for difficult and potentially dangerous conditions on both Wednesday and Thursday because of the incoming storm,” Whitmer said. “Staying home will keep you safe and will help emergency crews focus on improving road conditions and assisting those who need it. Michiganders are no stranger to big storms, and I know we can get through the next few days together.”

MSP Urges You to be Storm-Ready

Col. Joe Gasper is the state director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security and director of the Michigan State Police. He tells WDIV that it's important to be prepared for any winter weather conditions that may come our way.

“Travel may be extremely dangerous over the next few days, so we are asking people to stay home, if possible,” Gasper said. "Winter weather is not unexpected in Michigan but preparing beforehand is the best way to keep you and your family safe.”
