Driving into work every morning I always see a herd of deer, a couple of skunks, maybe even a cat or two, but I've never seen any wild turkeys running around in the downtown Okemos area.

Apparently they have been spotted in another Michigan city, though. According to the Lansing State Journal:

Turkeys are causing trouble in Charlevoix, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

The local turkey population has exploded this year, resulting in downtown-area residents getting incessantly chased or even jumped upon by the large fowl, said Charlevoix's Police Chief Gerard Doan.

Charlevoix, Michigan is such a beautiful area during the spring and summer months. I'm sure the last thing people want to deal with is wild turkeys chasing them around when they're just trying to do a little shopping or whatever.

The Lansing State Journal also tells us that the DNR is working on solving the turkey problem.

They have advised that residents do not feed the turkeys and suggested removing bird feeders for the time being. Turkeys are pattern oriented and territorial during their breeding season and will continue to return if they have a reliable food source, according to the DNR.

Well this explains everything.  No wonder Charlevoix is having turkey trouble.  Take down the feeders and no more trouble with wild turkeys.

It seems like Charlevoix isn't the only place experiencing this issue. The Lansing State Journal reports that the population is increasing all across the United States.

It's bad enough that we have an over population of deer running around all over Michigan, but the last thing any of us want to see are wild turkeys!
