Michigan State Spartan Golfer Piot Advances At U.S. Amateur
Michigan State senior James Piot has advanced to the second round of match play at the 121st U.S. Amateur golf championship, being played at legendary Oakmont CC (its famous church pew bunker picture above) in Pennsylvania on Thursday morning.
Piot, the 31st seed, defeated 34th seed Cameron Sisk 1-up to advance to Thursday afternoon's second-round match against San Jose, California's Eddy Lai.
Piot reached the quarterfinals of the Michigan Amateur championship earlier this summer before losing to eventual champion Patrick Sullivan.
James will return to East Lansing for his fifth year of eligibility this year, granted by the NCAA to athletes due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
If Piot wins the U.S. Amateur, he will qualify for next year's Masters, U.S. Open, and British Open championships. He is the only Michigan native to qualify for match play after making it through 36 holes of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday.
