A high school student in Newaygo, Michigan set off an explosive device in a classroom early Monday (3/9) morning. The boy injured himself and four other students, according to reports.

Police say they responded to an incident at Newaygo High School at 8:52 Monday morning. Newaygo is about 35 north of Grand Rapids, on Michigan's west side.

WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids reports that the device was set off intentionally, but the boy did not know how much of a blast would occur.

Initial reports indicated that the 16-year-old had brought a firework to school, but police later determined that the object was an explosive device.

In a Facebook post that has since been deleted, a school administrator posted that the boy had not intended for the blast to hurt anyone, but that he had shown "a serious lack of judgment." During a press conference, olice told 9 & 10 News in Cadillac that they are in agreement, saying the boy had no ill intent.

“We don’t believe it was any kind of malicious intent on behalf of the student,” Michigan State Police Spl./Lt. Michelle Robinson said.

High school students were evacuated from the building after the blast.

Four students were taken to the hospital by their parents. Their injuries have been determined to be minor. A teacher was also taken to a nearby hospital because of possible inhalation of chemicals.

Police are investigating, saying they have yet to determine what charges may be appropriate for the 16-year-boy who was responsible for the explosion.
