However, it is legal to dumpster dive here in Michigan, according to FindLaw... but (there's always a but) with a few exceptions.

While, it is legal to do so, there are some smaller rules that could come back to bite you in the butt if you're not careful. The rats aren't the only thing you have to watch out for.

According to FindLaw, there are a couple things you should watch for before jumping into that next pile of trash.

  • Warning Signs/Dumpster Locks

These are the biggest three to look for before diving into all that beautiful garbage. There are some other laws that you should of course be mindful of, but those are the biggest.

Always remember that you could be on private property, and that is where a lot of punishments come into play. While you may not be able to be fined for just jumping into a dumpster, you could be charged for jumping into it because it is on private property.

Always way your options. Maybe that treasure you have your eyes on aren't really worth it.
