Here's a heads up to anyone who relies on assistance from the Michigan Bridge Card system to provide food for their families. The system will be temporarily out of order for several hours this weekend.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced that the system will be going through an upgrade and will be out of operation beginning Saturday (10/16) starting at 11 pm. Officials the system to be back in operation by Sunday (10/17) morning at 11 am - but we all know that system upgrades can sometimes come with their fair share of headaches.

Officials say the state of Michigan is switching the Bridge Card program to a new provider.

During the outage, residents will not be able to redeem Electronic Benefit Transfer Cards loaded with food assistance, cash assistance, and Women, Infant and Children benefits, according to WOOD-TV.

Did You Know You Can Double Up on Your Food Purchases?

Michigan residents who take advantage of the Bridge Card system are eligible to double up on certain food items in select cities throughout the state.

How does it work?

When you use your Bridge Card, Double Up matches your milk, fruit and vegetable purchases dollar for dollar, up to $20 a day. That means you and your family get twice the milk and fruits and veggies.

You're eligible if:

  • You have an active EBT/Bridge Card
  • If you are on SNAP

There are several grocery stores in the Flint area that participate in the Double Up program. The Flint Farmers' Market also participates. Click here to find a participating location.
