Some out of work Michigan employees are now eligible for $1,650 grants.

Starting on Friday, January 15th, the Michigan Restaurant & Lodging Association Educational Foundation will administer the application process for the Employee Assistance Grants that are available to workers. Employees impacted by the most recent shutdown are eligible for $1,650 grants to help them out.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services enacted the latest gathering and face mask order on November 18th of 2020. Now those employees impacted can apply for the grants between January 15th and January 25th. The Michigan Department of Treasury will begin processing the applications to disperse $45 million in funds that were authorized by the Senate Public Act 257 or 2020.

Employees in the following industries that were impacted by the shutdown are eligible to apply:

  • Bars
  • Banquet Halls
  • Bowling Allies
  • Cafeterias
  • Casinos
  • Caterers
  • Food Trucks
  • Golf Courses
  • Hotels, Motels, Bed & Breakfast, Resorts
  • Nightclubs
  • Restaurants
  • Theaters
  • and other recreational facilities

We hear daily from bar and restaurant owners who are worried about their employees and these grants are a step in the right direction to financially assist these laid off workers...The MLBA was glad to be involved in the negotiations with the legislature and governor on this and we're happy to see it finally materialize. The next key goal for our industry is getting back to work safely...said Michigan Licensed Beverage Association (MLBA) Executive Director Scott Ellis.

To apply for these grants, employees can apply at mrlaef.org/money starting at 9 am on January 15th. The following information will be needed to apply:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Social Security Number
  • Date of Hire
  • Employer name, business name, phone, and email address
  • Proof of employment in November 2020
