UPDATE June 6, 2019 7:45am

John James officially announced his candidacy Thursday morning. Speaking to the Associated Press, he said he wants to "help people" because there's much work to be done healing the country and unifying Michigan. He says he will donate a nickel of every dollar his campaign raises to charity.

A military veteran and businessman John James will be trying to help Republicans gain control of one of Michigan’s Senate seats once again.

According to the Detroit News, after much urging from Republicans for John James to run, a new website was launched Wednesday which says that James is running to replace
Gary Peters in the US Senate in 2020; the website says that “Gary Peters has failed Michigan”, and that
Michigan needs to send a “political outsider” to Washington. John James is scheduled to appear on Fox News Thursday morning, and he teased the appearance on Twitter saying “you don’t want to miss this”.

James, an Iraq War veteran, first entered the political sphere in 2018 as he won the Republican Primary to face Senator Debbie Stabenow; he ended up losing in the general, despite much praise from leaders on the national stage including President Donald Trump. Gary Peters has been Senator since 2014, when he replaced Carl Levin.
