What Popular Valentine's Day Candy Sold In Michigan May Cause Cancer?

Consumer Reports is saying that everyone should not eat the popular Valentine's Day Sweethearts candy made by Spangler Candy Company.

Why?

Consumer Reports says that the candy contains a known carcinogen, Red Dye 3.

Director of Food Policy at Consumers Report, Brian Ronholm, says,

"Valentine’s Day Sweethearts candy that come with cute flirty sayings are a fun way to celebrate the holiday. But consumers should be aware that the iconic candy that is so popular for Valentine’s Day is made with an ingredient that is a known carcinogen. If you’re shopping for a Valentine’s Day treat for your sweetheart this year, look for one that doesn’t contain Red Dye 3.”

However, this is an ongoing debate about Red Dyes in candies.

Daily Mail shares that California may be one of the states that want to ban Red Dye.

"If the bill becomes law, it will block five chemicals from being used in foods sold or manufactured in the state. Each of these chemicals is already banned in the EU. Among the affected chemicals in Red 3, a food dye used in some candies. Previous research linked exposure to it to cancer in mice."

What Other Candy Has Red Dye?

If Michigan were to follow California's lead, there would be several foods and candies that would be affected.

What's The Most Popular Candy In Michigan For Valentine's Day?

While you may not be able to eat Marshmellow Peeps, other candies may be an easy replacement.

Unfortunately, in my opinion, Michigan chose the worst candy to love.

CUPID CORN!

Candy Store.com shared that,

"Just when we thought they were fading away, cupid corn made a comeback last year. After claiming a new #1 state in Nebraska, candy corn also regained the #1 spot in Michigan, where it had fallen as far as the number 3 spot in recent years after a long time top V-day candy for the state."

After cupid corn, Michiganders also love heart-shaped boxes of chocolates and conversion hearts.
