Watch Out Michigan: This Tick Could Make You Allergic to Meat
While living in Michigan, you are privy to all of the creatures and critters that you can experience here.
With all of the beauty you can find in our state, there are a handful of animals that can be harmful to humans if they interact with each other.
Yes, mosquitos are annoying but I think I found an insect much worse.
What Tick Could Make You Allergic To Meat?
Are you or your loved one ever in wooded areas or grassy fields across the state of Michigan?
You may have encountered this insect. Have you heard of a lone star tick?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shared that the bite from a lone star tick can cause an infected person to have a bad reaction to red meat, pork, and lamb.
No burgers, steaks, or pork chops for you.
Some people have reported that they could not have gelatin and dairy products after being bitten by this particular tick.
In most cases, people develop a meat allergy without knowing it at all.
This allergy is due to the tick's saliva causing Alpha-Gal Syndrome in humans and other mammals.
Alpha-Gal Syndrome Symptoms
You can experience the following symptoms if you have Alpha-Gal Syndrome.
- vomiting
- stomach pain
- diarrhea
- itchy skin
- wheezing
- swelling of the face, lips, and throat
- shortness of breath
While they are rare in Michigan, you can still be bitten by one. Look out for a tick with a white dot on its back.
The CDC has more information about the lone star ticks.
