People in Michigan have been debating for years about whether it's against the law to drive without shoes.

You've probably heard the myth that it's illegal to drive barefoot in the state. Well, that's precisely what it is...a myth. If you want to get in your car, kick off your shoes, and start driving down the road, go right ahead.

While it may seem kind of gross, driving barefoot is not only legal in Michigan but also legal throughout the United States.

There's also a myth that claims you can't drive your car legally while wearing flip-flops. Again, this is not true at all. While it's probably not the safest thing to do, it's far from illegal.

Former Michigan Sheriff Rich Martin:

Whether you are barefoot, have no shoes, or are driving with flip-flops, there is no law on the books that prohibits this.

Is it Safe to Drive Barefoot?

In some cases, driving barefoot is probably safer than wearing shoes. According to A nationwide insurance agency, If you’re going out and rocking a pair of stilettos, it may be safer to drive barefoot. Heeled shoes won’t give you a solid grip on the pedal, which can impact your ability to drive. That still doesn't mean that it's safer than wearing shoes, just those kinds of shoes.

To be honest, I don't know why anyone would want to drive barefoot. It's so freaking dirty and nasty. Who knows what has been infesting your floor mats and pedals? There's something about driving barefoot that just seems really gross.

When did the rumor/myth of barefoot driving start?

I don't think anyone really knows the answer to this. It's a rumor most of us have heard since we were kids. I remember my parents always telling me that it was illegal to drive with no shoes on. Boy, were they wrong.
