Michigan residents are well aware of the state's laws when it comes to underage drinking. While no one under the age of 21 is allowed to drink alcohol, is there an age restriction on those who serve alcohol in restaurants and bars?

After the country was hit with the 2020 pandemic, it was no secret that many bars and restaurants in Michigan were hit the hardest. In fact, some never recovered at all and were forced to close their doors. One of the biggest issues businesses endured was a lack of qualified employees. It seemed like everywhere you went, there was a staff shortage.

Until 2022, employers of bars and restaurants in the state were forced to only hire servers that were over 18 years old. That year, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a bill that would allow 17-year-olds to serve alcohol in restaurants and bars.

17-year-old servers must complete a training program through the Michigan Liquor Control Commission to handle alcoholic beverages. They must also be supervised by an adult while serving.

Michigan became the second state in the country to allow 17-year-olds to serve alcohol.

According to CBS News, in 2023 Wisconsin was looking to lower the alcohol service age from 18 to 14. Some believe that a move like that puts young people at risk of sexual harassment, underage drinking, and other harm. I agree, 14-years-olds don't need to be working in a bar serving alcohol to possible predators. The whole idea just feels a little creepy.
