One of my favorite places to grab breakfast in Lansing is Golden Harvest, on the corner of Turner and Dwight on the north end of Old Town.

Not only is the food always top-notch, the whole Golden Harvest experience is unlike anywhere else you'll find in the area - or dare I say, pretty much anywhere else at all.

It's impossible to accurately describe the Golden Harvest experience in words. You've truly got to go yourself to fully understand. But let me offer you a light primer.

The Décor at Golden Harvest

If you're unfamiliar with Golden Harvest and just passing by, you might think it's a junkyard.

The outside of the building is covered - and I mean covered - in an eclectic assortment of road signs, trinkets and other household items.

Every time I stop by, I notice something else on the building that I somehow never noticed before. This time it was the headless bicyclist.

There's a limited amount of bar, table and booth seating inside. You'll look around and see walls covered in stickers ranging from cutesy to macabre, tame to profane. If you go in the fall, you might guess that some of the décor is seasonal; let me assure you, most of what you see remains on display year-round.

The Menu at Golden Harvest

You won't be handed a paper menu at Golden Harvest, and it's not one of those places where you're expected to scan a QR code to see the restaurant's offerings either.

There are three ever-changing dry-erase boards that show everything you can order at Golden Harvest, and everything I've ever tried has been downright delicious. I got the "Bubba Sandwich" last time - bacon, sausage and cheese sandwiched between two slices of French toast, and served with a side of home fries. The time before that I got the "Big Basic" - pictured below. (Just look at those cheesy scrambled eggs!)

If your palate is a little more adventurous, you could try a chorizo black bean omelet, or perhaps the Cereal Killer Sandwich - featuring Cap'n Crunch-crusted French toast, ham, an over hard egg, and American cheese.

Your table will get its order after the table that ordered before you gets theirs. There's no hurrying deliciousness.

Does Golden Harvest Accept Debit or Credit Cards?

Every breakfast is a flat $15 at Golden Harvest, where cash is king. The restaurant does not accept credit or debit cards, but you can choose to pay using Venmo.

Don't Bring Your Pearls

There'll be no pearl-clutching at Golden Harvest.

Your server may be heavily tatted and/or pierced. Don't be surprised to hear the occasional F-bomb from the owner while she's on the griddle and chatting with customers at the bar. Consider it part of the restaurant's unique ambience, just like the wide-ranging (mostly alternative) playlist you'll hear playing in the room.

Golden Harvest is currently open Thursdays through Sundays from 9am to 2pm each day. It is closed Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
