Michigan’s Most Famous Area Code is Going to Get a Sibling
I have a feeling many Michiganders will be sad, and perhaps a little upset, about this change.
Detroiters, get ready to dial a little more, because the way you make 313 phone calls is about to change.
Detroit is Getting a New Area Code
Starting October 7th, you'll have to include the area code for all local calls; no more traditional seven-digit dialing.
Why the change? Blame it on a shortage of phone numbers.
The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) says we're running out of 313 numbers. To fix that, they're introducing a new area code, 679, for new customers starting November 7. But don't worry: if you already have a 313 number, you can keep it.

The transition begins with a six-month grace period starting April 7, during which you can continue using seven digits. But once October 7th arrives? No area code, no calls.
How Detroiters Will Need to Make Calls Starting This Year
What you need to do:
- Start practicing now: Get used to dialing all 10 digits.
- Update your contacts: Make sure all numbers include the area code.
- Check your devices: Alarm systems, faxes (yes, they still exist), and speed dial settings might need updating.
- Relax, nothing else changes: Your phone bill, call coverage, and emergency numbers like 911 remain the same.
So, Detroit, prepare those fingers for a few more taps: 679 is coming, whether we like it or not.
