Michigan has no shortage of amazing towns, villages, cities, and more to visit. However, when it comes to taking a day trip somewhere in the Mitten state, you really need to make it count, and there's one city in particular that's perfect for those who live in the Lansing area.

First, let's look at what makes a good day trip. I mean, it's right there in the name...day trip. You need to pick a place that will allow you to drive there and back, while also enjoying a few hours while you're there, all within just one day.

Second, there's got to be something to do there. It doesn't have to be anything big, necessarily. Just, something to do. Maybe check out a museum, dine at an interesting restaurant, enjoy nature (swimming, hiking biking, etc.), or even just walking around the shops.

The Best Michigan Town for a Day Trip

Hear me out; Saugatuck is only about an hour and a half away, which is the perfect road trip time. You can get there and back on a tank of gas, you don't have to stop to use the bathroom, and grand total you're only spending about 3 hours in the car.

Plus, there's no shortage of things to do in Saugatuck. There are plenty of cute little shops, multiple breweries, oodles of places to eat, and cool things to do. Saugatuck is home to the only chain ferry in the country. Plus, it's right there along the coast of Lake Michigan, obviously the best of the Great Lakes!

If you feeling like indulging your urge to hit the road, Saugatuck is a great place to go.

One of USA Today's '10 Best Coastal Towns': Saugatuck, Michigan

USA Today snubbed Michigan in its 2023 list of America's "10 Best Coastal Towns", but the publication made it right in 2024 with Saugatuck listed at #2. Have you been? Take a look at what you're missing.
