What do the Symbols on the State of Michigan Flag Mean?
The flag representing the State of Michigan has been in controversy over the years.
It is felt by some to look amateurish as if done by “a grade school student.” In lieu of these feelings, in November 2016, Senator Steven Bieda introduced a bill into legislature to change the flag by having a public design contest. It did not succeed.
In 2021, Representative Andrea Schroeder proposed establishing a flag commission to get the flag changed.....nothing came of it.
In 2023, Representative Phil Skaggs proposed yet another bill to redesign the state flag, but again, the attempt was not acted on.
The current flag was adopted in 1911 and was our third.
The first flag depicted an image of Michigan's first governor, Stevens T. Mason on one side, and our coat of arms on the reverse. The second flag that came about in 1865, had the state coat of arms on one side with the U.S. coat of arms on the reverse.
Amateurish or not, just what do all the symbols on the State of Michigan flag stand for?
