"We're Father and Son....". Just seeing this picture I can hear the jingle in all it's glory. If you grew up in Michigan in the 80s or lived in The Mitten State anytime after 1986 you hear it two.

In the mid-80s someone in a marketing agency not so far away thought to themselves: 'How can we help Father and Son Construction Company increase their business?' and someone said "GIANTS AND A JINGLE!".

If you look at these two enormous handymen, you'll see where Tim Allen might have received inspiration for Tim and Al's Tool Time wardrobe. Since this commercial started airing in 1986 and Home Improvement didn't hit the airwaves until 1991, there is a very good chance.

After rewatching this commercial I realized that there is a game of one-ups-man-ship happening between Father and Son. It seems dad always had to do just a little more than son, which could have led to therapy for Son. Here's my case:

Here Father and Son look happy although enormous. The jingle starts and immediately you begin singing along and you're distracted by it's catchy nature and you miss the passive aggressive nature of Father to Son. It starts with dear old dad reaching behind a hill:

What does pops pull from behind the mound?

It's a home addition! Look at how proud he is of using those giant hands to make a garage. Now it's the boy's turn to reach into his hill of tricks.

Look at that, he built a little sunroom for those tiny home dwellers! What a good kid.

The place looks incredible. Great job Father and So....wait a minute, what's Father doing?

The Old Man's got to one up his son and put a second story on the place!

Now you might not think that got to Son, being one upped by his dear old dad. But look at how he's holding that hammer now! The Boy does not like to be shown up, but he stands there singing that jingle like nothing is bothering him.

My guess is Son spent at least the profit from this cartoon remodel on giant cartoon counseling sessions over the last 30 plus years.

By the end of the jingle and commercial the Son has thought better of hitting his dad with the hammer and will lean up against Father like all good musicians did at the end of a song. Cross those arms and lean Father and Son! We will continue to sing your praises.
