UPDATE New Data: Michigan Car – Deer Collisions By County
Michigan's deer season isn't just about hunters in blaze-orange—it also means a whole lot of unlucky drivers will end up having a chance encounter with a deer. Looking at the latest available data from Michigan Traffic Facts (run by the Michigan Department of Highway Safety Planning and the Michigan State Police), we learned the state logged tens of thousands of deer-vehicle crashes. Some counties are worse than others.

2024 Michigan Deer-Vehicle Crash Totals
In 2024, Michigan reported 58,324 car-deer crashes, which is narrowly below 2023's total of 58,806 (at least we're consistent). Sadly, 14 of those collisions led to deaths, while 1,816 resulted in injuries. The gallery below ranks all 83 counties by crash totals — but don't scroll yet, because when is just as important as where.

Worst Time of Day for Deer Crashes
Primetime for hitting a deer (or, more accurately, the deer hitting your car) is between 6 a.m. and 8:59 p.m., with 14,274 crashes. That's nearly a quarter of the statewide total. The worst time of day for crashes that ended with driver or passenger deaths was between 9 p.m. and 11:59 p.m.
Worst Month for Deer Crashes
October had 9,248; November topped with 10,017. Unsurprisingly, this is also whitetail deer season in Michigan. Combined, these two months made up over a quarter of all deer crashes in 2024.
