The “Hidden” Village of Mackinac Island: Harrisonville
For as many times as some of us have visited Mackinac Island, have you ever wondered about the islanders? You know – the people who live on Mackinac Island throughout the year? They gotta live somewhere, right?
Well indeed they do, in a neighborhood that is occasionally blocked off from wandering tourists. I mean, would you like a bunch of strangers walking through your neighborhood, gawking at your yard, home, and belongings? Heck, no.
The community where the islanders live has lovingly been called “The Village” for years, but the official name is Harrisonville.

If it wasn’t for the paved road, you’d feel as if you were visiting Mark Twain’s boyhood. White picket fences line various sections of the street, with homes that harken back to a more quaint, simpler time.
The Harrisonville General Store sits in the center of town, supplying the year-round residents with food, beer & wine, hardware & household goods, and even handmade items from the neighbors. Nearby is the Mackinac Island Police Department.
Harrisonville is Mackinac Island’s escape and respite for the islanders every summer, away from the nosy tourists and hustle and bustle every vacation season. Next time you visit, be respectful of the people who call Mackinac Island their home.
