When it comes to cereal, we know about Kellogg’s and Post cereals dominating Battle Creek. But it wasn’t just those two that caused Battle Creek to be named “Cereal City USA”. There were plenty of other cereal companies in the area as well. Some hung around for a while, while others folded quickly.

Most of the other companies were independent, some with limited distribution and most of their names have been lost to time...but they were able to manufacture some unique cereals for the time, such as:

Armour Corn Flakes
Chief Corn Flakes
Cook’s Flaked Rice
Dr.Price’s Corn Flakes
E.C. Corn Flakes
Egg-O-See
Force
Grains of Gold
Granula
Heinz Rice Flakes
Korn Kinks
Korn-Krisp
Malt Breakfast Food
Malta-Vita
Miller's Corn Flakes
Purity Corn Flakes
Rippled Wheat Breakfast Food
Sunshine Shredded Wheat
Super Cereal
Toasted Grain Flakes
Uncle Tom Health Food
Van Brode Crisp Rice
Vigor
VitaSpelt
Vitos
Washington Wheat Flakes
Wheatlet
Wheato-Naks (Red Ryder)

As to an accurate count of how many other cereal manufacturers there were in BC, accounts vary. Some say there were forty, while others say one hundred. Some of them were offshoots, like the Postum Cereal Company (Post) and the Sanistas Food Company and Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company (Kellogg’s).

Currently, only the two kings remain: Kellogg’s and Post.
