When I say this town in Michigan is magical, it's not an exaggeration. In fact, it claims to be the Magic Capital of the World, and with good reason. But how Colon, Michigan, has remained under the radar is the real trick.

Harry Blackstone Sr.’s Legacy in Colon

Full disclosure, I'm a fan of magic, which is what led to my early introduction to Colon became home to magician Harry Blackstone. Blackstone was one of the country's most famous illusionists who traveled with his own railcar, full of tricks and items that would wow the masses.

Percy Abbott & the Magic Supply Boom

Once Blackstone moved from Chicago to Colon. He opened his own magic supply company and partnered with Percy Abbott. The pair didn't last long together, but Abbott's store went on to supply some of the world's best illusionists with the tools they needed to ply their craft and put jaws on the floor.

Where to Experience Real Magic Today

Fast forward to today, and Blackstone and Abbott are both gone, though you can visit Blackstone's grave and take a peek behind the curtain by purchasing your very own magic trick at Abbott's Magic Factory in Colon.

Of course, that's just a couple of the stops the Magic Capital of the World offers. If you want to do a magic tour, stop by the Grand Magic Theater, Sterlini Magic MFG, and Fab Magic to fully get your fix.

More Stops on Your Magic Tour

Grab a drink at Curly's Pub, a slice at Five Star Pizza, or a cup of coffee at Dawn's Cafe. I make it a point to stop by the Magic Capital Grille when I take a day trip to Colon.

Tips for Visiting

My one word of caution is that some of the magic shops keep odd hours, and even at times they've been advertised as open, I've found the doors to be locked. Almost, like they disappreared. Phone first.

Have you ever wondered how they saw a lady in half? This is the place that sells the boxes and the saws. They even make hats you can pull rabbits out of.
